Unknown ATM’s 1948 12.5″ Reflector & GEM.06.23.19

RA Bearing Mounts are skewed. Will build new frame to hold plates & bearings.
Got the CWs loose – couldn’t budge the lower clamp when mount was upright. Laid it over and the clamp bolts broke loose with fair ease. Important step to getting the GEM refurbed. yay. These CWs & clamps will be cleaned up and used for display setups. Will make a new set of CWs, upper keeper and lower keeper / toe-saver for general use.

Current thoughts:

  1. Pier – put the GEM on a pier mounted to a 4′ octagonal or circular concrete base. I have an octagonal base of that size. Flipped on edge, it is rollable. The one we have was a quick solution to too much concrete after a wall footer pour. It is nice, but no rebar. I’ll probably pour a new one, this time with rebar.
  2. Gotta bust those CWs loose, make the whole scope more manageable, safer to transport.
  3. Pier-in-a-pit?

1. I have an octagonal base of that size. Flipped on edge, it is rollable. The one we have was a quick solution to too much concrete after a wall footer pour. It is nice, but no rebar. I’ll probably pour a new one, in place, this time with rebar. A pier is a quick, simple build – 8~12″ x 0.125~0.25″ x 32″~40″ pipe welded to a square or triangular base plate ~0.25″ thick. Bolt to pad. Circular cap plate with pivot plates to angle the GEM. Add a fixed threaded rod to the cap & a slotted plate to the tail of the GEM for latitude adjust of the GEM. Easy-peasy. Rather quick.

2. DONE!! (and a lot easier than expected!) I’ll make a new clamps, toe-saver, and concrete or iron CWs with lock-bolts for general use. May make a short CW shaft as well – try to get this 8′ tube a little closer to the ground.

3. I like the idea of putting the pier in a pit – could get the scope a foot or two lower to the ground. Have to do a mock-up, see how low angle viewing would be.
